Land Transportation again divided into two parts That is,
1. Roadways
2. Railways .
Lets discuss about the Road transportation. Road transportation is most ancient method used for the transport the goods , Humans , animals and things.
India has one of the largest road networks across the world spanning over 5.5 million kms. Over 64.5% of all goods in the country are transported through roads, while 90% of the total passenger traffic uses road network to commute in the country.
Lets see some figures provided by Govt. Of India.
Lets More focus on road transportation in India.
For road transportation we are mostly depend on trucks or LPTs ( Long platform Trucks). There are different kind of truck in market with respect to their Weight carrieng capacity and Dimensions.
Again Road transportation is divided in three parts as per customers need .
1. FTL - Full Track Load
2. PTL - Part Truck Load
3. LTL - Less than Truck Load
FTL - full track load
The name only descibes the meaning of FTL , When consignor or Customer owned/ book whole truck for single trip is called full truck load, Here customer is charged for whole truck.
Example : Mr. John is have 6.5 tonn material for Mumbai to Bangalore then he will book a FTL for transportation ( 22 ft truck with 6.5 tonn wt carring capacity)
Pros -
1. U can schedule truck as per you priorities
2. Intransit Damage is very less .
3. Material of nature is already known so you can take precautions.
Cons-
1. Higher costly ( if you are having less load )
PTL - Part Truck load (Partial Truck Load )
Here customer will pay for his load only not for the entire fare of the truck . or in truck there are only
Lets take a example of - If 22 feet truck is running from Mumbai to Banglore which is having weight carring capacity of 6.5 tonn. And customer Mr John have load (consignment) for Banglore is 2 tonn, then Mr. John will pay for his 2 tonn only not for whole truck fare.
Pros
1. Cost is moderate , No need to pay for entire truck .
2. Intransit damage is low
3. Easily available in Indian Market.
LTL - Less than truck load
As the name suggests a load which is less than a truckload, This kind of load is lesser than the partial truck load .
A load of around 6-10 pallates comes under this kind of load ,
In some cases partial truck load is same as less than truck load.
There are some LTL service provider who are adding multiple touch-points to capture maximum customer . In PLT/ FTL vehicles are directly running from origin to destination, there is no any stoppages (touch points) .
example -
If vehicle is fixed on route Mumbai to Delhi , Then touch-points will be Surat , Udaypur, Jaipur and then delhi. Inthis case service provide can take load for Mumbai - Surat , Mumbai - Udaypur , Or Mumbai - Delhi ,
As well as he can book a load for Surat - Udaypur , or Surat to Delhi.
Pros
1. Very cost effective.
cons-
1. TAT is more .
2. More chances for damage.
3.Shipment handling is increased if FILO is not followed. ( Filo - First In last Out)
Most of the Logistics companies and local transporters are providing FTL services But there are some companies who are specialized for there PTL and LTL services.
Thanks ,
Shailesh
